Today’s Reading List: Probiotics can play key role in improving our health

We see the word on yogurt labels every time we enter the dairy aisle in the grocery store, but are there really any benefits to eating probiotics? According to a Toronto Star article, the “good bacteria” helps sustain health in our guts.

It’s exciting to think that something as harmless as a probiotic pill, a bowl of yogurt, or kefir could improve your health — and we’re a long way from knowing all the ways they could help. For example, in an initial study, type 2 Diabetes patients experienced significant decrease in fasting blood glucose after eating a specific probiotic yogurt. There’s also evidence probiotics improve oral health.

Of course, like treating any condition or attempting to improve health, it’s best to consult your health care provider before making changes.

People in Asia and Eastern Europe have consumed them for centuries in cultured dairy and fermented foods, and clinical trials have shown they are safe for infants, children, adults and the elderly. But people with immune-compromised conditions should be more careful; consult a physician if you fall into this group.
