Today’s Reading List: Ontario’s government plans to keep pushing for chains to post nutrition data in restaurants

The best way to make healthy choices for restaurant diners is through informed decisions.

That’s why the Ontario government plans to re-introduce a menu labelling bill that requires restaurants and fast-food outlets to make calorie information visible.

The Toronto Star today discussed the new menu bill including the idea that sodium should also be included.

A U of T study was published Oct 31 in the Canadian Journal of Public Health. Manuel Arango, director of health policy at the Heart and Stroke Foundation, said the study supports the case for having both sodium and calorie information on menus and fast food menu boards.

What it comes down to is making information available, the key is to make that information easily digestible and visible to the public. Doing so showed results in the U of T study.
The University of Toronto study, which surveyed 3,080 Canadians on meal choices using four mock-restaurant menus, found between 17 and 30 per cent of participants changed their order after seeing menu labels. It also found that 80 per cent of those surveyed want to see nutrition numbers on menus, even if they don’t use that information all the time.
